Istanbul – A City By The Sea

A couple of weeks ago I went to spend a few days in Istanbul. The city really lives up to its reputation and it would be an understatement to say that I wasn’t disappointed: Istanbul is simply grand, magnificent, full of art and history, amazing by its architecture, lovely and full of inspiration in its quieter neighborhoods. In one word – gorgeous.

What I particularly liked about Istanbul is its situation by the sea, in-between two continents. The city is so expanded, it’s incredible to contemplate. But it is almost always freshened up by the ocean’s breeze. Obviously, besides the pure and salty marine air, the great thing about it is that one can find countless striking views of the Golden Horn. Uskudar, on the Asian side, provides a great promenade by the sea with fishermen, seagulls, wooden houses and children taking a swim. For other lovely marinas, look at Ortakoy or Bebek, both charming. Also great to wander about and have a nice bite, the fish market by the Galata Bridge has delicious fish sandwiches…

  17. Your images capture the sea air and activity down at the harbour. There really is some history bound up in that city…

If you ever have half a day to kill -get out on a boat to the Princess islands.

    June 19, 2012 at 8:05 pm

    • I agree with Ray. The Princess Islands are definitely worth a visit. It is wonderful to take a horse-carriage ride (there are no cars allowed) around the islands. Also, since you have to take the ferry from Kadikoy, you get to see the financial district of Istanbul, which gives a completely different picture.

Your photos are beautiful and made me want to go back again. The one thing I love about Istanbul is that no matter how many days you spend there, you always discover a part you haven’t seen before.

BTW, where did you take the first shot from?

      June 20, 2012 at 12:08 pm

      • The first shot was taken from a bar called the 360, in the Galata area, according to its name, it has an amazing 360° view over the city. A great place to unwind and have a drink at sunset,I highly recommend it!

        June 20, 2012 at 12:16 pm

      • Oooh, thanks. I will check it out the next time we transit in Istanbul on the way to Antalya.

  20. Beautiful! I was in Turkey last year and you’re right, it is a place of stunning beauty, history, art, architecture… all rolled into one sea-swept place. It was so overwhelming that I found myself not knowing what to write about — lest I leave something out — and ended up not doing much about Istanbul itself. Capadoccia was one of my favorite places, too. If you’re interested you can see some pics here http://liveclay.wordpress.com/2011/06/25/turkish-rug-has-arrived/

    June 19, 2012 at 8:18 pm

    • Hi Laura, thanks! Yes Istanbul is amazing – this was my first time there and I was truly captivated by its beauty, its activity and mystery…I totally recommend it! Your post & picts are great too – thanks for sharing!

    • Hi! Your 2 days in Istanbul look great, very nice pictures.

      June 20, 2012 at 3:31 pm

  98. Beautiful pictures, but not so accurate description 🙂 Istanbul is amazing, mystical, vibrant, but it is not only ‘by’ the sea. The sea runs ‘through’ the city like its veins. I love the fact that when you’re lost in streets, you can suddenly see the bright blue of the sea. It sometimes feels like all streets lead to the sea somehow. It’s a city divided by the sea, two coasts have totally different characteristics. Whichever part of the city you are, you can always hear the seagulls. It’s a very unique city that gets you under its spell once you set foot.
